Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam (HSEE) is conducted by IIT Madras allow candidates to take admission in five-year integrated Master of Arts (MA) programme offered by the college. HSEE is conducted byIIT Madrasto shortlist aspirants for admission in five year integrated Master of Arts (MA) programme offered by the college. The first two years of the MA programme offered at IIT Madras are the same. However, after that the course branches into two streams – Integrated MA in Development Studies and Integrated MA in English Studies. Total number of seats on offer in IIT Madras’s MA course is 52 (each year).
Age Limit: General category candidates are eligible to apply for HSEE 2023 if they are born on or after October 1, 1996. SC/ST/PwD candidates are given age relaxation of 5 years.
Candidates meet the HSEE 2023 eligibility criteria if they have cleared any of the below-mentioned examinations with qualifying marks with some other required eligibilities.
The official website informs: “Candidates who have completed Class XII (or equivalent) examination outside India or from a Board not specified above should produce a certificate from the Association of Indian Universities to the effect that the examination they have passed is equivalent to the Class XII examination”. It further states, “In case the Class XII examination is not a public examination, the candidate must have passed at least one public (Board or Pre-University) examination earlier”.
To meet the eligibility criteria for HSEE exam, candidates should have secured at least 60% aggregate marks in the qualifying exam if they are from General or OBC category. On the other hand, SC, ST and PwD category candidates meet HSEE 2023 eligibility criteria if they have secure minimum 55% marks in aggregate in the qualifying exam.
“Where only letter grades are mentioned in the grade sheet, the candidate should obtain a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent marks, and submit it at the time of joining. In case the candidate does not provide such a certificate, the decision of the HSEE admission committee regarding his/her eligibility shall be final”, informs the official website of IIT HSEE.

Step 1: Registration
To fill the HSEE 2023 application form, candidates will have to log on to the official website of the exam and select from the menu “Apply Online” and follow the instructions on the site. The applicant has to enter all the data as per the instructions. The site will prompt to save the data on the system when necessary. Once the candidate has entered the details such as name, email-ID and phone number, the applicant will receive a confirmation mail, which consists of the HSEE 2023 registration number and password.
Step 2: Fill HSEE Application Form
Once the candidate has successfully registered themselves, the aspirant can fill the HSEE application form. The application fee needs to be paid through Credit Card/Debit Card/Netbanking/ Indian Bank challan.
Step 3: Get HSEE Admit card
Once the candidate has successfully filled and submitted the HSEE application form, the candidate will have to download their respective HSEE admit card, which will be available online on the official website of HSEE which will be released two weeks before the exam. Candidates are advised that the university will not send the HSEE admit card via post or courier and can only avail the admit card from the exam website.
Step 4: Appear for IIT HSEE 2023
The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Exam (HSEE) is of three hours duration and consists of two parts. HSEE Part I consists of objective type questions and Part II of IIT HSEE comprises of an essay question. Candidates are advised to go through the exam pattern, marking scheme and syllabus of HSEE.
Step 5: Check HSEE Result
The HSEE 2022 results will be released on the official website of the exam page. A common rank list is released with names of candidates who have secured at least 50% marks in the exam. Apart from this, separate HSEE merit lists are released for each category.
Step 6: Counselling
After the HSEE 2022 results have been declared, the counselling and admission process will commence. The college will release a merit list after the results have been declared, where candidates who meet the qualifying cut-off marks, will be called for counselling in Integrated MA programmes offered by IIT Madras.
HSEE- has two parts: Part I and Part II. Syllabus for Part 1 consists of English (25% marks of Part I), Analytical and Quantitative Ability (25% marks of Part I), and General Studies (in four sub-parts; 50% marks of Part I). Part II involves essay writing.
(A) English This section tests the candidate’s ability to understand and use standard English, and to appreciate the literary language. Questions are related to the following areas:
Numbers, Algebra, Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM), Calendar,
Basic Statistics – Average, Ratio and proportion, Age sums, Percentages, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Work and time, Discount, linear equations, elementary trigonometry.
Data interpretation, Analytical reasoning, Logical reasoning, Brainteasers, and Patterns.
